
Ormond was the daughter of Josephine Lab technician, and John Ormond (a stockbroker) from Epsom, Surrey. She is the fifth of five kids born to her parents. She was educated in private schools, at first Guildford High School and then Cranleigh School, where early lead performances in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady began to draw attention. After a year in arts school, she transferred to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art which she completed in 1988. Ormond first appeared on British television in 1989's series Traffik. This show focused on the illegal trade in heroin which was carried out from the middle of the East to Europe. Ormond played the addict child of the leading character, a Home Office minister working to stop heroin imports. This early role won glowing reviews.
